They also stay with the house when everything else in it has been replaced, which is why they show up on valuations in a way no fabric treatment does.
The performance case is equally direct. A closed shutter is a solid barrier rather than a filter, stopping light, heat and ultraviolet at the glass, with an insulating air gap between the panel and the window.

As energy-efficient window shutters, all three below reduce cooling load through the afternoon peak. The louver system also gives a control range no solid treatment matches: angled up to throw light onto the ceiling, angled down for street privacy while the room stays bright, or closed fully for darkness.
